Can anyone help me?

There are 2 computers (both running Windows XP Professional) connected to network. When any computer tries to browse the workgroup, error message comes:

Workgroup is not accessible And it asks me to check permissions or contact an administrator.

How could I solve that?

P.S. Computer 1 can ping Computer 2 withour problems, but reverse (ping from PC2 to PC1) is not available. Error comes in both computers.

aack... SMB protocal issues.

do both machines access the internet correctly? is their login process any different from those that work? I have had this problem before, but I can't remember how I resolved it. Sorry.
Zerg
Both computers can access the internet just fine.

1st has a main connection and 2nd uses 1st PC to use a shared internet connection. It's starnge, because just network browsing doesn't work, while internet access is pretty perfect

I've found this:

Symptom:

Your WinXP,  in a peer-to-peer network,  may receive the following error when you double-click My Network Places/Computers Near Me: <Workgroup Name> is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource.

The solution:

1) Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on one or more computers in the workgroup. To do that, go to properties of Local Area Connection>properties of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)>General> Advanced>WINS, check Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (If you have a DHCP-assigned IP address, select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server ). 2) Make sure the Computer Browser service is started.

Thank you, but this didn't help either.

I'm still getting the same error message

Have the same problem, I'm not able to solve it more than year... sad.gif
Zerg
Please let me know if you'll find a solution for this problem, as it's just annoying thing.

I can't use file sharing between computers on local area network...

The most annoying trouble in Windows XP.

All my network neighbours are complaining about this mad.gif

hi
i think you do one thing
logon on both computer as same user name and password
and also shar some folders on on both clap.gif
Zerg
Well, both computers use different usernames/passwords to logon to Windows now.

The most interesting thing is, that everything works just fine when you make a clean install of Windows XP, but it stops working after some time.

i found this thread on google and managed to fix this problem (i didn't end up finding anything useful, just remembered what I have done in the past)

right click a folder
choose sharing and security
you can either use the wizard or i recommend 'just enable sharing'
then once again deny their warning and 'just enable sharing'

that fixed it for me!
happy hunting
Zerg
Hi sanskrit.

Thank you for your tips, I'll try your solution. And welcome to the board smile.gif

Hi there

I have hadthe same problem:

Not sure if you have tried this, but if you disable the windows firewall - and then under my network places click on setup home or small office network, reboot both machines and you should be ok...?
Danzel
Windows Firewall is disabled on PCs in our network, but some computers still have this trouble.

Some others work fine. Stupid error...
Zerg
When you say disable firewall, do you mean just turn it off or disable Windows Firewall service completely?
bigboy
Sorry about that, I meant just Turn off windows firewall - check that you virus protection's firewall allows incoming traffic

If you have Norton’s internet security of MacAfee – they tend not to allow incoming traffic.

Zerg
Well, I even disabled Windows Firewall service using XP management console and it's the same sad.gif

If you allow all incoming traffic for your virus protection software, this might help...?

Are you using DHCP or static IP - make sure that the default gateway is the same and that they are on the same subnet.

We had the same problem... all got fixed however, when we installed a router...
matrix
After we got the router there havent been any problems, even though we are running both Zone Alarm Internet Suite, Nvidia Firewall, Norton Suite 2005 and Ad-aware Pro on all of our computers. You can get a good router at around 50 $, and I beleive its worth the investment. Another bonus is that routers provide additional security against hackers smile.gif
gROOVE
Router is ok, but what's the point to buy a router if you have just 2 computers connected?

you can try to lower the speed of your lan cards from 100Mbs to 10Mb.

What's the point? LAN speed has nothing about workgroup issues. You said something you don't know yourself or I'm wrong. Please correct me if I am.
